Foot Care In Senior Citizens - What You Need To Know

Foot problems are quite common with senior citizens. These problems can be either because of normal wear and tear on the feet over time. They can also be sign of other serious illness like arthritis, diabetes or other nerve disorders. This is the reason why it is important for senior citizens to practice good foot care. It is the responsibility of the health care providers and the family members of the seniors as well as themselves to help them with foot care.

It is important to check feet regularly and if they feel that there is a serious problem, they should check with their doctors immediately. If you sit for long period of time, you need to put your feet up to improve circulation, stretch and walk regularly, take a warm foot bath, and massage your feet and also dry feet carefully. Most of the time it is the wrong shoes fitting that causes the main problems.

It is quite common for shoe size to change with age. One needs to measure their feet weekly at the end of the day. Many people have one foot that are larger than the other. It is important to wear shoes that fit to the larger size foot. It is important to try out shoes before purchasing them to ensure that they are of the right size. You need to walk in the shoes before purchasing to be sure they feel right. One should avoid shoes that have heels and are not comfortable. Avoid purchasing shows that are tight in hopes that it will stretch. Soles should be fitted properly and not slip. The shoes should have thick soles that will cushion your feet when walking on hard surface.

Some of the common problems that seniors experience are nail fungal infections, dry skin, corns, warts, bunions, ingrown toenails, spurs, swelling and others. It is important to meet with an experienced doctor if you face any such problem.
